We all remember the coordinated onslaught of the ubiquitous (and perpetually sold out) embroidered Kenzo Tiger top at New York Fashion Week a couple of seasons ago, then Balenciaga got trippy with it, Les Plus Dorés help you to declare your designer team allegiance, and Brian Lichtenberg‘s tongue is still firmly planted inside his cheek with his now-perennial-favourite parody line of logo shirts and sweats. Whether you’re a fan or not, it’s hard to deny that statement sweatshirt has swiftly moved from quirky trend to unlikely style staple, and is probably here to stay.

Now, I have to admit that it’s taken a while for the idea of spending real money on something with its roots in what I used to wear to gym class, but this iteration of the humble cotton classic is anything but ordinary. Exploded prints, embellishments, slogans, motif, cheeky parady logos… resistance is futile. There really is something for everyone.

I decided to dip my toes in with this Preen sale find (current season available here), and have quickly fallen in love with its laid-back yet detail-rich charms. I suppose I was finally persuaded to adopt the look by Alice, above. The best, most refreshing thing about hers? It was a lucky score from the Vogue Festival!

Alice is wearing a Chanel bag, Converse sneakers, and Zara jeans (similar Current/Elliott ones here). Find your perfect sweatshirt match at ASOS.com, BrownsFashion.com, MatchesFashion.com, Net-a-Porter.com
